Meet the Artists

This exhibition, curated by Liliana Beltran, features the work of 36 artists, showcasing the devastating impact of addiction, the healing power of art, and the unwavering strength of community. Each piece includes a hand-carved wooden head by Nick Reale, who created the exhibition after the tragic death of his brother from years of addiction and his niece’s addiction struggles and recoveries.
The subject has always been clear; my father’s addiction to alcohol. I had to really delve into some uncomfortable ground. The piece did not appear to me in a vision, developed over time through discussion with family and personal contemplation. It unraveled like a dream.

My contribution, "Idol Hands", plays on the metaphor of idle hands and its connection to the cycle of substance abuse. It melds the delicate allure of glass with the steadfast presence of wood, symbolizing the fragile balance between vulnerability and resilience.

When I decided to participate in the Faces of Addiction project I immediately thought about shame and how it can contribute to addiction. I have seen how not sharing our shame can give it more control over us. Because, it feeds the addiction by temporarily numbing and quieting those internal voices and feelings of shame of which we are desperately trying to hide form.
